Inspiration from Focus 2014

Posted on June 7, 2016 by Victoria Smee

Following Focus 14 at Chelsea Harbour, I am getting lots of ideas and inspiration for new projects from all the new fabric collections and wonderful window displays, not least of all from the beautiful floral display in the centre dome, it was raining flowers!

I am also now trying to burn off all the extra cupcakes, nibbles and fizz that were consumed!

Such a huge array of design this year, a few of my favourite new collections being from Mulberry and Chase Erwin, both very different collections but equally very versatile.

Coming from Mulberry I love the thick, colourful woven fabrics such as the Bohemian Paisley, so thick you could add a trim to the perimeter edge and use it as a rug! I also love the Game Birds Velvet and Torridon Velvet, a woodland scene complete with prancing Deer; this also comes in a linen version. Both the velvet and the linen would make up as beautiful soft furnishings and window treatments, the woodland scene of course looking at its best seeing the full pattern repeat in all its glory, perhaps as the back of a sofa or covering a wing back chair or even for walling. The new collection keeping to the roots of its quintessentially English brand but with a very decorative and at times a more modern gothic styled edge in the form of the Lomond Velvet which graced their showroom sofa. I am looking forward to incorporating this collection in both my London and Country projects.

For one of my current projects, I’ve been using The ‘Molecule’ collection from Chase Erwin. I used ‘Molecule’ linen viscose in colour Crystal to make up double pleat headed curtains, and they look beautiful! It was also a very easy fabric to work with, slipping though the sewing machine and easy to hand finish. It has a really good heavy weight to the fabric and drapes beautifully, I therefore didn’t need to line or interline the curtain. Instead, I just kept the curtains dressed in for 24 hours to help keep the shape. The ‘Quadrille’ fabric from the Molecule collection is great for upholstery and comes in warm colours. As well as having a subtle pattern, it has a very high rub test and will be perfect for both residential and commercial projects.

Although not new to this year’s Focus I couldn’t resist taking ANOTHER look through the Jessica Zoob collection for Black edition at Romo (winner of the Elle Decoration British Design Awards 2014). I am in love with all of these beautifully textured, bright, colourful, contemporary imaginative designs, in particular the Pleasure Gardens Velvet Bloom which would impact on any scheme.
